Which level do you need?

fide records a separate level for the oral and the written part. The level you need depends on your goal and on your canton and commune. These are guide values; we help you confirm the exact requirement.

Ordinary naturalisation

As a Swiss-wide minimum, fide oral B1 and written A2 (a guide value; your commune or canton can set the detail). We help you confirm the exact level with your municipality.

Settlement permit C

Ordinary settlement usually requires oral A2 and written A1. Early settlement (after five years, good integration) often oral B1 and written A1. Confirm with your cantonal authority.

Residence permit / family reunification

Often oral A1, depending on the permit type and canton. We help you place your case in a free first consultation so you aim at the right level.

Who this preparation is for

  • People applying for ordinary or facilitated Swiss naturalisation who need a language certificate.
  • Applicants for the settlement permit C (permanent residence) or early settlement.
  • People who need a language proof for a residence permit or family reunification.
  • Anyone who would like the requirements and the plan explained in English first.
  • Group course: learners who have completed level B1. Private lessons: any level from A1 to B1.

What you will practise

Speaking: picture description, a phone call to make, move or cancel an appointment, and a conversation, as in the oral part with two examiners.
Listening: short Swiss everyday recordings, each played at most twice, as in the test.
Reading: forms, notices, adverts and letters, finding the key information fast.
Writing: short everyday texts in standard German, such as messages, e-mails and simple letters.
Scenario practice: the real-life situations the fide test is built around.
Exam strategy, timing and staying calm under test conditions.

One honest note

We prepare you for fide; we are not the test centre. The fide exam is taken at an officially accredited fide institution. Registration and payment of the exam run through us (exam fee plus a CHF 35 handling fee), separately from the preparation. What we do is get you genuinely ready. The preparation is mainly in German, because that is what gets you through; your orientation and plan can be in English.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. Your first orientation, the explanation of the requirements and your learning plan can be given in English, so you understand exactly what is expected. The lessons themselves are mainly in German, because fide is a German-language test and you need to practise in the target language.

fide stands for Français, Italiano, Deutsch and is Switzerland's official language proof, run on behalf of the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM). It checks your everyday German through real-life Swiss scenarios and is recognised for naturalisation, the settlement permit C, residence permits and family reunification.

No, and that is an honest, important point. We prepare you for the fide test; the exam itself is taken at an officially accredited fide test institution. Registration and payment of the exam run through us, so preparation and registration come from one place.

As a Swiss-wide minimum, ordinary naturalisation typically requires fide oral B1 and written A2. Cantons and communes can set the detail, so we recommend confirming the exact requirement with your municipality before you register. We help you with that.

For the ordinary settlement permit C, oral A2 and written A1 are usually required. For early settlement (after five years with good integration), it is often oral B1 and written A1. Confirm the exact values with the responsible migration authority.

It has two independent parts: an oral part (speaking and listening) and a written part (reading and writing). Both are graded separately, and you receive a level from below A1 up to B1 for each part, recorded in the language passport.

The oral part is scenario-based: with two examiners you describe a picture, make a phone call to arrange, move or cancel an appointment and hold a conversation; at B1 you choose between two topics. Listening is a separate short task within the oral part. You may speak standard German or Swiss German. The centre confirms the exact timing.

In the written part you read typical everyday documents such as forms, letters, notices and adverts and complete tasks, then write simple texts yourself in standard German, such as a message or a short letter. It takes around 60 minutes.

The highest level certified with fide is B1. Results range from below A1 to B1, separately for the oral and the written part. For levels above B1 you would take a certificate such as telc, which we also prepare.

Yes. The group course runs online on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, and private lessons are available online as well as in person in Zurich.

Yes. A private fide lesson costs CHF 90 for 45 minutes, online or in Zurich, at a time we agree with you. It suits any level from A1 to B1 and is built around your goal, your exam date and the skills you find hardest. The fide online trainer is not included in private lessons; it is free when you book the exam or the group course with us.

If you have completed B1, aim for naturalisation and the four session dates suit you, take the group course: it is the lowest price per lesson and includes the online trainer. Choose private lessons if your level is still below B1, you need the settlement permit C, your exam is close, one skill is missing or you prefer to learn alone.

Because the oral and written parts are independent, you can repeat just one part and pay only for the repeated part. In private lessons we then deepen exactly the gap with you so the second attempt holds.

The group course costs CHF 350 for 8 lessons of 45 minutes (CHF 43.75 per lesson); with a KulturLegi (Caritas) you pay CHF 245. A private lesson costs CHF 90 for 45 minutes. The fide exam fee is separate: CHF 250 for the full test, plus a CHF 35 handling fee when you register through us.

At Leutschenbachstrasse 95, 8050 Zürich (district 11, near Oerlikon and Glattpark), and online by video call.
